For all you kids with nowhere to go on Thanksgiving, c'mon out and dance the turkey off with yours truly and my faithful sidekick, Seanzi. We're gonna spin some awesome records to get your giblets quivering!
It's been a rough couple of weeks in the personal life of Just Derek. Probably the roughest 2 weeks of my life. Things are looking on the up and up, though.
Today is my birthday. I'm 29 years old.
In the past 12 hours, I have:
1. Found a new apartment. 2. Eaten biscuits and gravy. 3. Seen THE TRASHMEN. 4. Bought some awesome records.
And tonight I will try and have a good time for the first time in a while.
I should also note here that this weekend is the amazing, life-changing WFMU Record Fair. 125 W. 18th St. between 6th and 7th Aves. It's for a really great cause (supporting the greatest free-form radio station on the planet), and you will find the rarest, most awesome records around. Live broadcasts, live bands, videos, and celebrities. It's the biggest record fair in the US, and a great time! Head on out and pick up some awesome stuff!
I picked up a Dead Moon LP (1990's "Defiance"), Twistin' Rumble Vol.1, and some great 45's (Attak, Stones, Andre Williams, Escalators, Brentwoods).
Head on out there if you're in the NYC area and support a great cause!
I'll be back soon once my life is sorted, things are kind of a wreck right now, but I'll talk at you soon enough!
Alright. A good morning to you all. It's a slow Monday in the office, and I'm a little sore from the amazing, amazing, amazing PIERCED ARROWS show at Maxwell's on Saturday. If they're touring in your neck of the woods (and they probably are) GO SEE THEM!
But back to the business at hand.. I actually have a record for you!
Today we're headed in a streetpunk direction with an anthem from 1982, so away we go!

So where was punk in '82? In the US, hardcore was in its prime and spreading like the plague to all the nowhere towns. Business was booming under Reagan, and some of the classic records of the era were being released.
In the UK, things were a little different. Punk had turned a corner somewhere into post-punk and synthpop leanings. What remained was becoming concentrated, much like hardcore in the US. In the country that pioneered "punk" into what is generally viewed as the stereotype, the sophomore (junior?) class of bands were distilling all that had come before them into a focused laser.
The featured single today is an anthem from the Class of '82. A 4-piece from Worcester, UK, this is the 2nd single from The Samples, and their second appearance on No Future Records (the first was on No Future's "A Country Fit For Heroes" compilation).
"Dead Hero" was coincidentally released a week after the start of UK military operations in the Falkland Islands, and many shops refused to carry the single until after the Samples issued a press release letting everyone know that the song was about World War I. Thatcherism in its prime, eh?
All 3 tracks on this record are brilliant, but the A-side is a real standout in a period where the UK was producing some meathead yobbo garbage (with a few exceptions).
Here's the title cut, "Dead Hero":
Although this was one of No Future's biggest sellers (7,500 copies), it's not an easy record to find, Stateside. I finally found a copy in Los Angeles after searching for a couple years and paid about $30 for it. If you can find it, buy it.
That's all for now.
See you folks in DC at NEW KIND OF KICK FEST this weekend! I'll be DJing on Saturday night!
Sorry about the lack of updates lately.. For being "Just" Derek, things have been pretty hectic.
Last Friday was the one-night-only(?) return of SUBCULTURED to Bruar Falls! Thanks to all of you who came out on a rainy night to have a party with us! Extra-special thanks to Seanzi for his continued support behind the decks and to our special guest GABBY, who came all the way from DC to spin some boss sounds for you!
I'll be DJing again on Saturday October, 17th in the DC area for the NEW KIND OF KICK festival going on in Silver Spring, MD. Some great great bands on the bill for that one.. Check my entry below for details/lineup.
THE OTHERMEN continue to get sweaty with all the NYC kids that are in-the-know about how to have a rockin' good time. We are currently seeking a reasonably affordable recording studio to track our debut EP. Keep your eyes open to this spot for more information on upcoming gigs, etc.
THE OTHERMEN also have t-shirts for sale! They're $15 shipped anywhere in the US and they look like this!
Buy now for Christmas! Help us make a record! These are handprinted by yours truly on the finest 100% cottonry! Shirts are available in white with kelly green print, or in black with orange print!
Also in band news, I've got another project in the works (playing bass this time) with Chris "Crypt-o-Fur" DiSanto of the almighty MEMPHIS MORTICIANS! We've got some good ideas/basic songs going in a garage-soul vein. If The Othermen are a party, then this thing is gonna be a DANCE party. Think Link Wray meets Stax/Volt.
Anyway. I now have a rippin-fast computer setup at home after a long battle with my old G4. Got things replaced with a Mac Pro desktop and I've got the scanner hooked up to post up some more records for you in the next couple weeks.
ANOTHER DJ appearance is coming up from yours truly!
I'll be heading down to our nation's fair capital of Washington DC on October 17th to guest DJ the second night of the NEW KIND OF KICK FEST! The fest runs October 16-18 and has some AMAZING bands on the bill (THEE CRUCIALS! HUZZAH!).
You can grok the flyer below! Extra special thanks to Gabby and Rebzz for hooking me up with this gig!
See all you Washingtonians(?) in a couple weeks!
And remember to come out this Friday to Bruar Falls in Brooklyn for the return of SUBCULTURED!
Washed up late 20-something that spends too much money on records and not enough time on being an adult.
I live for primal drumming, loud guitars, and voodoo rhythm. Rock and roll in all of its forms is what keeps my engine firing on all cylinders and a will to live burning in my gut.
